OFF is a freeware RPG developed by “Mortis Ghost” in 2008, distributed through the French RPG Maker forums.
Players assume the role of The Batter, a figure tasked with the sacred mission of purifying a world
corrupted by darkness. As they traverse surreal zones, they are faced with ominous enemies and
challenging puzzles leading players to reflect deeply upon the nature of the world. The game’s
cryptic storytelling leaves it up to players to find meaning amongst this surreal journey.
OFF’s cryptic nature has led players to many different interpretations of the game, resulting in countless fan theories and much fan-made content such as video essays and fan games. Its inscrutable narrative has not only sparked widespread online discussions but has also inspired several indie game creators, including Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale.
Moreover, a remastered release of the game is in the works, with Toby Fox as a composer of the remastered soundtrack.
